Reader Reviews:Wow! A smashing swashbuckling adventure for the 5-9s (0/0 people found this helpful)This is a smashing book, a well-written and exciting story perfectly pitched to read to a 5-6 year old and for a 7-8 year old to read to themselves. Three children from the Popcorn islands (2 girls and a boy - so equally appropriate for both sexes) have a plan to stop the popcorn cargo on their island's ship being taken by the dastardly pirates. There's daring and adventure, a captain who needs saving and a dog, a cunning plan involving exploding popcorn and a good scattering of black and white stylized pictures. It's brilliant, and if you like it I also recommend The Bubblegum Tree in the same series.
A good light-hearted, messy & funny story! (6/6 people found this helpful)I haven't come across anything by Alexander McCall-Smith that I haven't liked yet. This is funny & would be a good entertaining story to read at bedtime. No boring bits!
Fabulous and entertaining kids' literature (3/3 people found this helpful)I read this with my two 6 yr old boys and we enjoyed it so much. It nicely demonstrates how doing a good deed is not always as straight forward as it initially would seem. The kids were desperate to read more each night - my boys and i definitely recommend it! It's well-written fun. DoughNot miss it! (5/6 people found this helpful)A really lovely story of children helping their friendly school janitor through the selling of doughnuts supplied through a pyramid of well-wishers - until they become over-run with doughnuts. It's a lovely story for boys or girls, and really great books for boys of this age seem to be hard to come by, and who could fail to get excited by the idea of being awash with delicious doughnuts? It's perfect to read aloud to a 6 year old, with just enough pictures to inspire their own imaginations, or for an older child to read to themselves. I also particularly recommend the Bubblegum Tree and the Popcorn Pirates for anyone who enjoys this.
