Editorial Review:

The first in a sparkling scientific series by veteran author Terry Deary, The Spark Files 1: Space Race, begins with the brightest and the dimmest of the Spark siblings squabbling about the shape of the earth. One minute they are afloat on a dodgy dinghy called the SS Titanic and the next they are catapulted into space with the dastardly Master Minde hot on their heels. But this is more than an adventure story. As the tale unfolds a series of practical, scientific experiments interspersed with fascinating facts about the sun, moon and earth are introduced, cleverly mingling reality with pacey storytelling.

The chances of a child and his parents agreeing on the value of a book must be fairly slim. Mum and dad want educational. Child wants aliens. In the Spark Files Deary and coauthor Barbara Allen have hit upon a magic formula to keep everyone happy. --Susan Harrison

5/5 stars

Scary with head-bursting laghs! (0/0 people found this helpful)

I really enjoyed this book, espicly the insturctions on changing materials, like how to make butter and also the twist at the end! Even thogh it is scary, the book is really funny, the laghs built up towards the fanily at the end of each chapter. A great mixture of funny and scary mad axe people!

Excellent for the eight year olds! (2/2 people found this helpful)

One of the finest books of the series, of a rather dumb brother and clever sister(whose names are Sam and Sally), who is trying to prove to him that the world is round. But the evil master-mind (the school head teacher), sends them on to a one way trip to Pluto. The kids meet some aliens who are scared of the sun dragon's witch are realy just comets. The two go to check it out and they find the aliens hiding in caves. (To pass the time they have ballon races!) When the two say its okay to come out they ask the aliens to see if they've got a ballon to get them back to earth. They attached it to the rocket and blast off to Earth. At the end they land on the beach right where they started. As the story unfolded, more and more laughs appered, they just kept coming atchya! The best book I have read in a long time!
