Reader Reviews:Truly a treasure (7/11 people found this helpful)I never wanted to go to Naples, I didn't even know Capri was nearby and I most certainly never heard of San Michele. But once there, I read a few words from this book that were on display at the exhibition in Munthe's house, and those few words were enough to make me buy this book at once. You shall do the same if, as one reviewer put it, you are ready to enter Munthe's land - a land quite similar to ours, yet so different. Sometimes more tragic, other times more beautiful, and incredibly interesting all the time. Here you can read stories about love, crime, adventure, nature, you name it - and above all, animals, and one man's limitless love towards "our dumb brethen". It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you want to share it with your friends, it makes you think very hard and maybe even rethink your life a little bit. A human book... (8/18 people found this helpful)Nice book... It brings such a pieceful and sincere feeling into my heart. Some of the moments described there, I felt as if I have experienced them myself... Amazing feeling... A Classic to be Re-read Every Few Years (4/8 people found this helpful)I was introduced to this charming book by my mother over 30 years ago, and have in turn introduced it to my wife and daughter. It has gone through hundreds of editions in countless languages and is still being read by those lucky enough to discover it. A gem of inspiration (7/8 people found this helpful)I accidentally stumbled upon this book the same day having visited the Island of Capri and wanting to have visited the Villa San Michele, but unfortunately having missed it. Needing to read something in English the Italian shopkeepers wisely had a few copies in stock. I took it as a sign that the book must be bought and read. I cannot recount how many times I had tears well up in my eyes with this simple yet profound story. I fell in love with Axel Munthe and all his colourful characters both human and animal alike. Read this book and keep it close to your heart! A book that opens one's eyes (2/4 people found this helpful)I like this book not because of what Axel gave up to have his dream but what because what he did to attain it. He did not give up anything, except perhaps his sight, but rather he put up with the life of his time to achieve his goals without really hurting anyone. A great book to motivate you.
