Reader Reviews:The unique story of a great army (4/4 people found this helpful)This is an excellent book which gives a comprehensive and highly readable account of Fourteenth Army, Britain's 'Forgotten Army' which drove the Japanese out of Burma in the Second World War. This book brings alive and in detail the unique feature of 14th Army which was its mixed, multi racial nature; Indian, Gurkha, British, East African and West African regiments fought alongside one another under the remarkable leadership of General Slim. This book also covers the amazing audacity and detailed planning involved in the Chindits' Operation Thursday which took a division strength glider force deep behind enemy lines (surely an airborne operation to rival Arnhem)and covers Slim's own masterstroke - the crossing of the Irrawaddy in two places. The book also gives some idea as to what it must have been like to serve in one of 14th Army's constituent formations and how they all worked together.
