A colleague gave me this book and I must say I like and dislike the book in roughly equal measures.
What I like about the book is the author is obviously passionate about her subject and has put a lot of thought and work into this book. She writes of the frustration of teaching in a modern university and the changing expectations of students and authorities (governments and university administrators).
What I dislike is she seems to have given no consideration to disciplines other than her own, I suspect she has never spoken to colleagues in the scientific disciplines. I also dislike her overuse of footnotes, it is acceptable (IMHO) to use them to provide references, but at times she uses them to clarify her argument and I believe such clarification ought to be in the text.
The author has recently taken up a chair (professor) in media studies at Brighton, and she gave her inaugural lecture last week (January 16th, 2008), and I see that the presentation was entitled: "Google is white bread for the mind", I don't know anyone who went, so I did a quick google for a report, there was plenty of pre-event publicity, but I couldn't see a post-event report by someone who was there!
