5/5 stars

Excellent (7/8 people found this helpful)

I bought this book to aid my A2 history coursework, i must say that the book is very useful indeed. It only skims the surface, but it gives an overview of the main events, both in Vietnam and back home in America, this book was very useful, with some usueful documents at the back of the book as well. If you dont want a really in depth book, but on a good overview then this is deffinately the book

An Introduction to the Vietnam War (20/21 people found this helpful)

I recently returned from a 1 month tour of Vietnam, and during my time there I was blown away by the beauty of the country and it's people. It's easy to see even now, 30 years or so on from the War, the spirit that drives the Vietnamese. I guess it was the fact that it's difficult for a Brit like me to understand the impact of the Vietnam War (or American War, depending whose side you were on) on both the US citizens, troops and the Vietnamese themselves that drove me to research those particular events in Vietnams broad history.

I chose this particular book because I had read other reviews that had described it as fairly in-depth. The truth is however, that although extremely well written the book only just skims the surface of what went on during the conflict. The information is accurate and the descriptions of the places where the fighting took place are spot on (at least the places that I visited whilst there), and overall the book does give you a feel for what was happening during that period both in Vietnam and back in the US. I found the book really didn't teach me all that much more than I had learned during my short visit to Vietnam, however for those who have yet to make the journey to that wonderful country (and I urge you to go, and go now while it's still relatively unspoilt) it would provide an excellent introduction to what is definitely a prime example of a modern day David and Goliath story. I rate the book with 3 stars maybe because I was looking for more detail, however as a starting point it's probably worth more.
