Reader Reviews:BRILLIANT BOOK, WE'RE ADDICTED TO THE SERIES (0/0 people found this helpful)I READ THESE WITH MY SONS EVERY NIGHT AND WE ARE NOW ON BOOK 6.
Why authors should stick to writing, not narrating!!! (0/0 people found this helpful)My oldest two children requested this audio book and I was subjected to it during car journeys. Although I personally find the Baudelaire family's bad luck a bit too cringeworthy for my taste, Tim Curry's excellent reading had made the first two books tolerable. What a shock it was, then, to switch this on and hear a monotonous voice with little change of intonation for different characters, or even different emotions. I could hardly believe that anyone would pay an actor to read that badly, and it seems they didn't; Lemony Snicket reads the book aloud. Looking at newer listings, it seems that Tim Curry may have recorded the whole series now - at least on the boxed set - so if you want an audio version, be careful which one you buy. Disaster, danger and death (0/0 people found this helpful)If you haven't got the stomach for a story that includes a hurricane, a signalling device, hungry leeches, cold cucumber soup, a horrible villain, and a doll named Pretty Penny, then this book of dismay will probably fill you with despair. Though it is very miserable this book is also very puzzling because there is a code that needs to be cracked. Missing people and a very wide window crash may frighten you in this terrifying book. Beware! This book is for only children under 16 and not a peek from an adult is allowed. Plus kids under seven must not read even a sentence in this horrible book. Rating: 8/ 10. One of my favourite Lemony Snicket books (2/2 people found this helpful)This book and The Erzats Elevator are my favourite books written by Lemony Snicket. The plot to this one is more intriguing than most of the others as it involves more exciting chapters. The chapters I am refering to are the ones where they are sailing in a hurricane and the leeches are attacking.

After the death of their beloved Uncle Monty, the third installment of Lemony Snicket's tale has Violet, Klaus, and Sunny heading toward the home of yet another new guardian. Left by Mr. Poe at Damocles Dock at the edge of Lake Lachrymose for the taxi that will take them to the home of Josephine Anwhistle, the orphans must once again wonder about what fate holds in store for them. Will the gramatically correct dowager be kind like Uncle Morty, or retched like Count Olaf?
