Translated from Czech, The Year of the Frog loses nothing of its lyricism. It's an odd but moving tale of a young man in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. Due to his father's political activism he is not permitted to attend university in this strict communist society. To try and gain some fulfilment from his life he has two obsessions: running and his girlfriend. His runs take the reader through the communist streets of Bratislava, introducing them to colourful characters. It's a love story on two counts: between Milan and his girlfriend, and also Milan and his country. Don't be scared off by literature in translation, this novel gives you characters that are so compelling that you wont be able to put down the book until their story ends.
