Valuable...but requires the CD and workbook! (7/7 people found this helpful)
This is used in the Goethe Institute for first year students. It will not work as a stand alone way to learn German though. The workbook and the CD will flesh out the concepts taught in the book. The vocabulary words are only defined ( in English) in the workbook, which does require a lot of cross referencing. Having said that I am quite pleased with my progress with the book.

I have reviewed several German language course books for beginners and find the Themen neu 1 to be comprehensive. The grammar is explained well, especially for people who prefer to learn via rules. The only fallback is that the graphics are pretty naff (evidence by age).
I also found out that this is the "bible" at the Goethe Institut (the official German language institute)!!!
