A modern Ulysses!! (1/2 people found this helpful)

This book is of such literary significance I'm Surprised David Norris hasn't called for an O'Carroll Day! Substitute bikes for BMWs and carry a platinum cord though.

Elegaic, if that's the roysh word? (3/4 people found this helpful)

If Paul Howard has any sense, he will leave Ross alone for a long time. By far the best book in the series, it is also a perfect farewell to a character who has found the moral compass he wasn't really looking for. Like that other brilliantly conceived diarist, Adrian Mole, Ross's reappearance every five or so years could mark milestones for the generation he represents. However, to have him simply grope his way through a novel a year until the sales make it no longer worth the while will be a disservice to a character who in this book, leaves us with a faint hope that all moral hope is not lost for the cubs of the Celtic Tiger. You da man Ross.

JK Rowling eat your heart out, Ross goes Dark Dark Dark (5/5 people found this helpful)

If you liked all the other books you will love this book, if you want more reality this has it too. I've read all the books and got a few friends hooked along the way but I have to say that this one was the best.
Paul Howard must be a fan of "Only Fools and Horses" because this book is like any of the really good episodes of that show. I say that because there were parts where I was nearly wetting my pants with laughter (unfortunately on a plane at the time sitting beside someone who could only be best described as a Charles O'Carrol-Kelly look-a-like based on what he was talking to his wife about) and that humour is then followed by a couple of points of real sadness. Two people die in this book and one of them horrifically and Ross copes quite well with the whole thing. Ross is growing up and also ends up in a real job at one point in the book; it's a tough job but not the sort of job you would ever expect to ever be undertaken by Ross. He actually draws a little closer to his dad as well and you find yourself feeling very much sorry for his dad as well as Ross as they both lose literally everything. At points you actually find yourself proud of Charles and you can tell that Ross is too. As for his mum you actually end up despising her as opposed to feeling sorry for her. I have to say that I have always had my suspicions about Sorocha and in this book they are heightened even more. His mates are as usual great in times of need and all at different points actually genuinely need Ross to be good to them.
If this book is anything to go by this series is evolving in the same way that the Irish economy is . It will leave the fans hanging on for more and more and will leave the real critics with no option but to give Paul Howard credit for allowing the series evolve as his skills as a writer are improving.
Really looking forward to the next book and of course the play.
Hope this doesn't read too like serious and stuff.
