Marian packs a lot in! (0/0 people found this helpful)

The plot focuses on how the lives of the three main female characters are affected by one Paddy de Courcy, who is definitely not a nice man, but who manages to charm numerous women, including Marnie, Grace, Lola and Alicia. Amongst the humour coursing the story, serious issues are dealt with such as domestic violence, alcoholism, adultery, and cancer. There is a political underscore, and cross-dressing features. There is the usual mix of family life, friendships and romance. All in all, it's an enjoyable read, and yes, the ending is satisfying because Paddy does get his comeuppance. I am not sure what I thought about the way Lola's sections were presented. It was in diary format, and took some getting used to, though it was very funny. I think Lola and Grace were my favourite characters. Lola's romance with Considine is touching, and Grace is an interesting character. Her life with Damien is well-presented. I'm afraid I got annoyed with Marnie. Though I was sympathetic at first, her refusal to admit she was an alcoholic irritated me, but I guess Keyes' portrayal of Marnie was realistic.

Another hit from Marian! (1/1 people found this helpful)

Another brilliant novel from the best in Chick lit! Couldn't put this book down for three days, neglecting all my duties as a wife and a mother! House is now a state, husband in a huff and I my right arm is in agont after not putting down this monster heavy book for so long!
Another great read, making me want to laugh out loud, especially in regards to the "Trannies" and also cry as the book progressed and the truth gradually comes to light!
So great to find a collection of books that you just want to read over and over again!

Remarkable! (1/1 people found this helpful)

Loved it. Couldn't put it down.Haven't left the house for days!!! Didn't want it to end. This novel is very different to Ms Keyes previous tales. But probably one of the best. She is an amazing woman and author. A bit tricky at the start as you have to get used to the way that 'Lola' is written. But I think that is what makes this a captivating book. If you love Marian you will love this - but be warned it will take over your life for a few days - 668 pages of fantastic characters and story.

Loved it, but... (1/2 people found this helpful)

Another great book from the queen of chick lit: Marian Keyes. I loved that she took on grittier subject matter than her normal fare. Would be a great beach read!

While overall, I loved the book, I have to agree with some of the other reviewers on this site: the writing style of the character Lola was really annoying. It was written completely in Bridget Jones style, which somehow didn't work in this book the way it worked for Helen Fielding. I admit I ended up skipping quite a few of Lola's pages, as I just got fed up with it all.

Great book with lots of surprises and excellent writing (5/5 people found this helpful)

I'm always on the lookout for a books that's well written AND has an actual plot--you know, a beginning, middle, and end? You'd think this would be the norm, but if you read as much as I do, you know it's not.

Marian Keyes is one of the few writers who can actually pull you in, keep you turning the pages, and then build up to a good ending. S. Kinsella is another one, but she doesn't hit all the right spots every time.

THIS CHARMING MAN is about one, well, charming man and his connection to four women. This is a serious book with funny moments, but if you think about it, it really has some intense social ramifications. Some of the characters are better drawn than others, but still, overall, this is one heck of a book. I'd have to recommend two other books for your reading pleasure: REMEMBER ME? and the novel FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. Both are excellent and worth your while.
