Translations which are close to the essence. (12/12 people found this helpful)

It is amazing to realise that Mr Seth, author of A Suitable Boy & Equal Music, enjoys the simple classic chinese poetry form known as the 'Tang Shi'. The three poets of Du Fu, Li Bai and Wang Wei belonged to the Tang Dynasty era, where the various schools of thought such a Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism were widely promoted. It is not really nesscary to emphasise that the nature of their writings were influenced mainly by the school of thought which they followed, particularly in Li Bai's case. I have read some of the poems in their original language before I read Mr Seth's translations and I find myself enjoying the manner in which he has proceeded to present these poems. I agree that some of the lyrical quality is lost when it does not have the Mandarin tones, yet he has not failed to get the true feeling of the poems across. This is particularly evident in the poem by Wang Wei entitled 'Lady Xi', when the true feeling is conveyed by what was not said rather than what was said. It was an excellent effort and I hope that Mr Seth would translate other poems from other time periods as well, like the 'Song Ci' and the poet Su Dongpo, which he mentions in his introduction. The Three poets in his book are only focused on one time period.
