The Summoning Dark.... (0/0 people found this helpful)

A truly cracking Terry Pratchett read for long time discworld fans or the new to his work.
As with almost all T.P works there is a intelligent and satirical 'real world' theme to this work.
The city watch take the starring role and as always dont disappoint. Featuring the 'newer' members of the watch such as Cheery and Detritus taking the lead roles with the old favourites of Nobby and Fred with a more back seat position, although their encounter with Sir Reynold Stitchley at the 'Gallereah' had me in stitches, all abley lead by Sam Vimes.
Serious and comedy moments abound, one of the better Ankh Morpork based books of recent times.
Top Marks!!

What a great Book! (0/0 people found this helpful)

I loved this book from start to finish. It's everything you need in a Terry Pratchett classic. How he defines the characters so that you feel you know them on a personal level and the way that he creates issues based on modern day problems. This book is all about tolerance of not only people of different races and religions but of the police as well. Very funny and a great read.

Intelligent satire (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is amongst the best of the Discworld series. As ever you can see Pratchetts political positions clearly in the book.

It is a book about race and about hatred and it is about how we progress and how those who try to prevent progress fight down and dirty. It is about how fundamentalists lose all sight of reality - how they reinvent the world according to that fundamentalism and how pragmatism will triumph. Slowly with the drip, drip of generations and the loss of many lives but the fundamentalists of all types will lose. Black and white will become gray but this is not a bad thing.

All hail the geeks - the mad gamers might save us all!!

Much better, back on the Pratchett path (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is what 'Monstrous Regiment' wanted to be, but fell short of.

Satire should, above all, be funny. In 'Thud' Pratchett once again finds his stride. He openly mocks the modern world (on all sides) and its political correctness, ignorance and doctrine whilst keeping the literary, if not literal, tongue firmly in the cheek.

The pace doesn't let up with the winning formula of an angry, confused Commader Vimes racing against time to solve a murder and prevent imported cultural bigotry from turning his city into a battleground. With the establishment bending over backwards to accomodate Dwarf and Troll beliefs at the expense of its resident population, it seems the Law has become an afterthought and is in danger of being superceded by minority (rapidly becoming majority) rights. This book gets nearer to the knuckle than a shrink-fit glove and turns the harsh light of sheer common sense onto a subject that tries to hide underneath a web of twisted values, lies, deception and hereditary ignorance. Sound familiar?

With his usual dollop of gentle humour, engaging characters and sheer fun, Terry Pratchett is back on the path of excellence. Whilst his recent apparent penchant for political and social commentary may not appeal to some, 'Thud' does it all with a smile and good old-fashioned fair play for all. The book is also, thankfully, without the uncomfortable awkwardness or tedious plot of 'Monstrous Regiment'. Fans of the City Watch will enjoy this one.

P.S. Two nubile, naked, girls together in a sloppy pile of mud? Yes, it happens.
