Editorial Review:Viva Las Vegas! Gambling playground of the rich and poor alike, home of a million daydreams where the only way to make yourself heard is to shout above the constant din of slot machines paying out hundreds of dollars in small change. But Vegas can be a nightmare for the hapless visitor--after all where's a chap to go to be wed by Elvis, take a helicopter ride down the Strip or find the finest purveyor of 36oz medium-rare rump steak? Enter this invaluable pocket-sized Timeout guide, which packs an incredible amount of information into it's 290 pages. There's more detail here on Vegas then you would ever have thought possible and listings are varied and detailed allowing the roaming tourist to pick and choose the best places to go and sites to see from hundreds of possibilities. Mini-reviews are included of every destination which manage to be both light-hearted and informative and make this wee volume a good read on the aircraft on the way over to the US. Accompanied by a potted history of the city, tips on how to gamble effectively and a handful of clear, crisp street maps of prominent areas this is one travel guide no self-respecting visitor should be without. Reader Reviews:Welcome to Fabulous Time Out LasVegas! (1/1 people found this helpful)This book really does contain everything you need to know about Las Vegas. It gives an honest, critical appraisal of pretty much every aspect of the city, and while it plays to Vegas' strengths, you'll also see that it's not all roses. This is particularly evident in the architecture section and when talking about transport and certain areas between Downtown and the Strip. A must have book for anyone visiting Vegas, or who just wants a good look at what its like warts and all. An insider's guide to Las Vegas (4/4 people found this helpful)If you want an insider's knowledge of where to go, what to see and how to get the most out of Las Vegas, this is the book for you. You get an honest appraisal of Vegas hotels, useful reviews of bars, cafes and restaurants, and an overview of nightlife and the music scene in the city. There's a great shopping guide that will get you away from the hotel malls and into some of the independent stores, a brief look at wedding options, and a broad look at trips around and beyond Vegas. Take this book with you and you'll feel like a local. Packed full of useful information (9/9 people found this helpful)This is a compendium. It lists virtually everything you'll probably need when visiting vegas from where to stay to tipping customs in Sin city. In terms of accomadation prices can vary enormously from week to week so it's actually better to check the hotels website for more accurate prices. There's an introduction to each chapter which gives you a flavor of the topic your about to read. It's then followed by detailed factual information as opposed to any critical reviews. What's probably the sacrifice is the lack of photos but I suppose that's a small price to pay. For the most part you probably won't use the majority of the book but it's good to know that you have particular information at hand should you need it, should that be phone numbers or banks. For better and a more up-to-date guide to what's actually going on in the city it might be a good idea to pick up a free copy of What's On when you get there. The guidebook also contains information on the surrounding areas such as the Grand Canyon, Area 55 and the incrediable ghost towns that are only a short drive (by american standards) away. I have also read number of other guides and most are of a similar standard. There's isn't much that distiquishes between them so I think it's purely down to the aesthectic appeal of the books. Things can change really quickly in Vegas so make sure you get the latest edition. Concise, accurate - and Fun! (10/10 people found this helpful)I didn't have time to read reams about Las Vegas before flying out - this guide gave me just enough info to get the most from my visit. I quickly threw away the other guide I bought. The first half of my trip was business (it's convention central in Vegas) and the other half was vacation. I used the book for suggestions for lunching and dining business clients, for finding hotel rooms for last-minute delegates, for finding a hotel for my own vacation base and for trips out of town, eg to Hoover Dam and Death Valley. Every note and easy-to-read map was spot-on. The book is rigorously honest and deals compliments and brickbats evenly. It gives you an idea of atmosphere as well as factual info, and takes into account a various tastes, circumstances and age ranges. It's a really good all-round guide - I'd buy other Time Out guides based on the quality of this one. BTW - if you are a vegetarian looking for the best Vegas guide for your needs, forget it. You may as well try to get a good vegie meal on Mars as get one in Vegas. Bring your own instant noodles. Far better than any other guide on Vegas (13/13 people found this helpful)I spent a long time in a bookshop looking for what seemed the best guide on Las Vegas. I choose this Time Out guide, and I haven't regretted the purchase since. Vegas is a fascinating place, and this book provides everything you need to know and nothing you don't. They've included a section on how to gamble, for example. And the final chapter on where to go out of town is brilliant if you're thinking of a 2-centre holiday because it goes as far as the Grand Canyon and Los Angeles. Definitely recommended.
