Editorial Review:Some say Venice. Some say New York. Some say London. But in arguments as to which is the Greatest City in the World, there will always be passionate proselytisers for Paris -- and now that it is even easier to reach the French capital from the heart of London, it is perhaps time to look again at the available guidebooks to the City of Light. Time Out Shortlist Paris 2008 is (in this spanking new edition) probably the best pocket guide to the city -- and while the description `pocket'does not actually fit many books that wear it, in this case it is literally true. The Paris Shortlist 2008 identifies the cream of the city's restaurants, shopping, nightclubs and entertainment -- with, of course, that nonpareil Paris sightseeing commendably foregrounded. The fact that this is put together by the Time Out team (under editorial director Ruth Jarvis) ensures that the guide has the kind of edgy, informed coverage that is the hallmark of the magazine. A particular virtue here, of course, is the fact that because the guide is annual, it can take in immediately the most au courant venues, alert us to the fashion and news developments (and, let's face it, Paris fashion is an important element for many people!); other standard features -- such as the itinerary for suggested days out, maps and side notes, remain invaluable. Some may object to the advertising, but it has to be said that such things are always apposite to the main text, and never seem to be an intrusion. --Barry Forshaw Reader Reviews:Quick Reviews! (3/3 people found this helpful)The Time Out travel guides are amongst the most well written, handy, informative, useful, and overall best guides in the world, with a wide series covering cities and countries across the globe. This edition, relating to Paris is no exception, giving the reader valuable insight to the city, as well as providing information on the best places to go, monuments to see, and restaurants and bars to visit. Not initially being a fan to these types of guides, being a believer that you should go, be surprised, and experience the world for yourself. However, for less adventurous travellers, families, and couples - no trip to Paris should be complete without this.
