Excellent overview, good depth and extremely readable (0/0 people found this helpful)
(comments on the first edition) This is an excellent book, which --helped me a lot in my first telecommunications job - without it, I wouldn't have had a clue what anyone was going on about! It's a very clear, readable book, but it doesn't skimp on the details of how ISDN, ATM, SMDS and Frame Relay work - it really has about as much detail as you could wish for.
It's not a "theoretical" book either - I think both the authors have worked or still work for British Telecommunications, and the book also points out some of the pitfalls and limitations of the technologies they discuss.
Above all, it's not just about the technologies, but about their application in the 'global marketplace', and how communications will keep transforming the way we work and live. Top marks.

This book is a well written guide to data network technology. It covers all of the modern protocols in enough depth to give you an appreciation of what they are, what they do and where they fit. I found a surprising depth of information in quite a few of the chapters (on the face of it, they look quite brief), yet the whole book is easy to read. Although not my interest, the authors do consider how data networks evolve and what lies ahead.
