Two Women (20-20 Special Edition)

I enjoyed this book so much that i decided to put cole on my list of favourite authors. However, she wasn`t there long because every book of hers that i read after that was like a re-run - loads of sex, violence, ill-gotten wealth,glamour, `gangsters`, drugs, prostitutes, beaten wives etc etc. You can only read the same stuff a couple of times before you get tired. I think it`s time cole either changed the record or put away the type writer for good.I give this book 5 stars as it deserves it - but she can`t expect to keep selling the same story under a different title and a different front cover.

This was my first ever Martina Cole book which my aunty borrowed my mum who passed it onto me as she said all the girls in work had read it, well i couldn't put it down, gritty and unpredictable a very enjoyable read I can assure you once you have read one of her books you will prob end up owning most of them!!

This was the first Martina Cole novel I read and I was hooked from the very first page. This book shows Martina's imagination is simply brilliant and she writes straight from the heart. A very gritty lady indeed. I must say that I enjoy her older novels a lot more that the newer ones. (However, I have not read Faces yet.) I normally read her novels on my Christmas vacation by the side of the pool, and it is amazing howmany other people love her work too. You can always guarantee to meet new people on holiday chatting about Martina Cole novels. People just love her work.

I was lent this book by someone where I work who told me I just must read it. So I did, even though it is certainly not the kind of book I would choose for myself. It started off OK and I found myself eagerly turning the pages as I really felt that I needed to know what happened to Sue, the heroine.

It is an entertaining book (OK it won't be some people's cup of tea as it is very gritty and grim) and the story did keep me interested. However, it is rather badly written. Ms Cole frequently uses words and expressions that would not have been used in the era about which she writes and she also repeats herself quite a bit (if I hear the phrase "brooks no argument" one more time I'll scream). I think she needs to use the Thesaurus a bit more!

I found the story tailed off slightly after Sue had gone to prison, and as other people have pointed out, the title Two Women is completely inappropriate as the book is hardly about Matty at all; it is Sue's story.

The ending was rather Hollywood; for all their grim lives and tragedies, everyone certainly came up smelling of roses at the end! Compared with the gritty realism of the former part of the book, the ending just seemed silly and as if Ms Cole had got bored and decided to stick a "they all lived happily ever after" in and hope that no one noticed.

Certainly not one for literary snobs but readable. Having said that I don't think I'll bother with any of her others as I have a feeling it's a case of you've read one, you've read 'em all!
