Yup - have to agree with the first two reviews. Bought for me by my son for a birthday present, I suspect he may have just looked at the words "John Peel" on the sleeve without perhaps reading the notes as to what was contained therein. Perhaps I do him an injustice, but it was with some trepidation I put this on the car CD player this morning. Well it's just a gem from beginning to end - stuff you would never ever be exposed to in the normal course of life but all of it interesting, listenable, thought provoking and in some cass downright moving. From a guy impersonating an old Ford car (rather well it has to be said) through what is probably now known as rockabilly, teatime jazz, brass band, blues ... the list is endless. I had a great run to work and shall doubtless enjoy this cd for many more.
Absolutely unclassifiable and how you decide on a star rating I know not. I give it 5 for historical interest and the brass band track (can't remember the track number) but if you are a fan of some of JP's more punkish leanings - maybe think again.

When you play this within iTunes the genre is described as 'unclassifiable' and this is the best word to describe this eclectic compilation. Listen to it late at night and imagine JP intorducing each track, and before long theres a smile on your face. Still miss the guy and this fantastic collection of tracks I guarantee you'd never possess (or even want to) is one of my most regularly played CDs recently....

This CD is an absolute GEM. I confess I bought it in a certain bookshop on the edge when I heard track 9 over the instore speakers. I like Billy Williams and have the 78 so asked what CD was on.....Sheer serendipity, I got their last copy. At Amazon you'll have no such problem! This is a selection of discs from John Peel's 78 rpm collection; a personal project interrupted by his death in 2004, it has been completed by his widow and issued by Trikont. Each 78 has an explanation in the booklet for its inclusion; there are 78's from the relatively common like "Tom Hark" and Winifred Atwells version of the "Charleston" to a disc of impressions by Freddy Dosh that are... interesting....
I bought it for the Billy Williams (1877-1915) track, a disc version of the song that was his first cylinder for Edison.
I would suggest you buy it for the sheer breadth of material and talents here, the like of which you'll not find anywhere, not even on radio now.
