I enjoyed this book as it always remindes me that im glad i never have to be put in that possision, but be wary if you have not read may military or war books before, the time that he spends in sub Zero tempature may lead you to think that it is not totaly true, but i can not say ether way if it is or isent, i wasent there, but if it is, then Jan is a very though and they certainly dont make them like they used to!! Rock on Jan Baalsrud

How to describe this incredible story? It made me swear out loud, shout, and nearly dislocated my jaw from sheer jaw-droppingness. It's written well, as we have come can expect from David Howarth - nice, easy to read, pleasant. Nothing new or unexpected, just pleasant.
It's basically a brilliant book that has a story the like of which I have simply never heard. Buy it!

a great book (4/4 people found this helpful)

In my opinion is one of the best books I've ever read. It symbolises the triumph of the courage and the spirit against the worst circunstances.
An incredible story. It seems impossible to believe it is a true story.

Nearly a great book (4/7 people found this helpful)

I am a fan of books on exploration, especially those that relate to the Arctic and Antarctic and was intrigued when I saw this in a local library sale. As a story of suffering and triumph of the human spirit in the most adverse of circumstances there are few books I have read that can compare. I felt however that the quality of the storytelling let the story down somewhat. As it is told in the third person I didn't feel that I related to the subject of the book very well and felt the prose to be too dry and lacking in emotion. Also I was disappointed by the illustrations in the copy I had, I am afraid one snowy mountain looks very much any other when viewed from a distance. On balance a good book that could have been great.

Feeling like you up against it - read this book to find out (9/9 people found this helpful)

This book makes the tales that cam out of the gulf war look tame. Stories about going 3 days walking through the deserts of Iraq and then having to do a couple of heroic things is nothing compared to the struggle faced by Jan.

Jan went to hell and back in the worse terrain the world has on offer. Not only is he the hero but he is helped by so many who risk their lives to help a man in the finals stages of life. Their actions are inspirational and truely saved him.

You wont put this book down.
