An excellent place to start... (0/0 people found this helpful)

Very good beginners book - I'd never spoken Welsh before, my family comes from Wales and so I thought I'd give it a go. As one of the previous viewers says; listen to this a few times and you suddenly find you can count, name colours, say hello. All very basic but you do need to start somewhere.

I found the layout of the book really approachable as well. I've always found learning languages difficult and the cartoon approach means that there are no dense lists of words or grammar to scare you off! I would imagine this makes it a great book for children too.

So if you're looking for a good place to start - buy this book! It definitely helps - I was flicking through the channel guide for S4C the other day and actually found I could read bits (the children's programmes naturally!) - exciting stuff!

Beware of the CASSETTE not CD (4/5 people found this helpful)

Please be aware, as I was not, that this comes with a cassette tape. Hardly handy for "on the move" learning nowadays. I have no way of listening to a cassette or turning it into an MP3.

I sure the book may be great, but for me this was a complete waste of money. Please be aware that you have to have some way of listening to the cassette.

Welsh for Beginners Tape/Paperback Complete Pack (24/24 people found this helpful)

This is not as juvenile as it looks, and is definitely the best intro for the complete beginner! Keep listening to the tape over & over whenever you can, and look at the book alongside it now & then, and, SUDDENLY, it falls into place and you find that you can suddenly count in Welsh, and say simple phrases and ask simple questions; my favourite so far "beth ydy hwn?" which has a lovely melodic ring, believe it or not! Every thing starts to make sense and you can go on to the more in depth books/cds that are available on the market. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED!!!

Excellent, fun guide to Welsh for beginners. Suitable for adults as well as children. Covers all the basics using cartoon illustrations. Worth buying.

Good basic conversational grounding (97/98 people found this helpful)

Adults, don't be put off by the childrens style cartoon nature of this book. This book gives you a great entry to Welsh conversation. Most adults when trying to learn a language try to jump in at a level too high for them and because they're not fluent in a week get put off and give up. This book starts at a very basic level and gives you the confidence to try something harder.

I live in Wales now but was brought up in England. It always amazes me to see all the young children speaking in Welsh and effortlessly changing back to English. How did they learn Welsh? Well how did you learn English? The answer, very simply to start off with. You picked up single words and then moved to simple sentences and developed from there. This is exactly how you learn in this book.

My only criticism is that the book seems to be fairly South Wales biased. People in the South of Wales speak slightly differently to people in the north. They pronounce, and in some cases spell words differently. They also construct sentences slightly differently in some cases. There is no mention of that in this book. However putting that aside you could make yourself understood in all parts of Wales if you followed the text in this book.

All that is left to say is 'Pob Lwc'
