The walks are not - or at least not all - up to date (1/2 people found this helpful)
I liked this book when I got it - it seemed to give good, easy-to-follow descriptions of the walks. I bought it for just one of the walks, close to where we were staying (near Kolymbari).
We set off one day around 4.30 p.m. - the walk was said to be 10 km, with the first 8 climbing up the mountain via the asphalt road, and the last 2 km on pathways cross-country almost directly downhill back into Kolymbari.
It was August, and very hot, but the climb up was a good walk. Very demanding in the 30C heat, but fantastic views, as the book described.
We very easily identified the place to turn off the road to start our descent. However, after only about 50m we had difficulty matching the way to the description in the book and after 100 m we had to give up and turn back. Clearly, the paths had become overgrown since the authors had taken the walk, and a fence they referred to was now 2 fences - so when the path split in two and the book said "follow the fence" we didn't know which one. The vegetation was so thick underfoot we could barely see a path. We saw that it would be impossible to find our way without a guide, and the book was no help at all.
We had no choice but to retrace our steps - turning a 10km walk into a 16 km walk. The walk's starting point was 2km from where we were staying, so in all it was a 20km walk - the last 5km in total darkness. And we were shattered.
From now on I will be very careful about buying walking guides. If the walks are off the beaten track, then the track becomes rapidly unidentifiable.
