Really Useful (1/1 people found this helpful)

I was bought this book by my long-suffering boyfriend and it really helped. It's difficult when you have Crohn's to have meals which won't upset you, but still have all the nutrients you need. The author isn't overly scientific, but at the same time all the facts are there and laid out in a simple and easy to understand way. Although there are certain foods included in some recipes that I don't particularly like or that I know upset me, with the list of fruit and veg that hurt and heal at the beginning of the book it is quite easy to substitute certain ingredients. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who suffers with Crohn's or UC, and because the author is a fellow sufferer it feels like you're getting good sound advice.

Informative and Useful Resource and Cookbook (8/8 people found this helpful)

Essentially this is both a resource book on the practical issues of nutrition and IBD as well as being a recipe book with over fifty recipes for meals, snacks, drinks and puddings which will be kind to your gut.

Chapters in the book include: The Principles of Eating Well, Food Safety, Planning Your Meals, The Need for Vitamin & Mineral Supplements and the recipes which include something for every meal of the day.

The resource information is well presented and makes easy reading - at no time does she boggle you with science or bizarre terminology. It is also quite evident that the author is a fellow sufferer (of first Ulcerative Colitis and eventually Crohn's) and the personal insights that she gives are useful and more honest than in other books that I've read on the subject.

As only about half the book is dedicated to what we can't eat and why - it isn't as in depth as other books on the subject of IBD and diet but it does cover the pertinent points so it's a nice easy book to read if you don't want something too heavy. I would suggest that you use this book alongside James Scala's The New Eating Right for a Bad Gut as the two work well together without overlapping each other.

As I said before - the recipes in the book cover something for every meal of the day including snacks, drinks, soups and side dishes. There is quite a lot of choice and each recipe highlights what nutritional benefits it has, which is always a bonus. And as another reviewer pointed out, the measurements are American, although it's not too difficult to convert these. If I had one complaint it would be that some of the recipes do use things that are sometimes quite bad for the gut (or at least mine) such as dairy products, sugar or peanut butter. But since everyone's different I guess that's not too much of a complaint as there are plenty that I can and do use.

If you've got either UC or Crohn's then I would highly recommend this book if you're trying to help yourself feel better by controlling your diet - I'm sure you won't regret it.

WONDERFUL BOOK (11/11 people found this helpful)

[...] Received this book and it was so good to read about it from someone who completely understands what its like to live with IBD. Yes we can eat fruit and veg! The book tells you which foods to have and which to avoid and why, has nice recipes (in American measurements, but just look up conversion online), chapter on what supplements to be taking. Bliss. [...] I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to know what to eat with IBD, when you're worried about eating things that will upset you, so you just eat stuff that's not particularly healthy just so you will be ok to get through the following day.
