Where's my cow? Is this my cow? It goes "Quack". This is not my cow! (1/1 people found this helpful)

This book is just a bit of fun guys. It's on the same par as JK Rowling's Fabulous Beasts And Where To Find Them, not a literary masterpiece on it's own, but alongside the actual story (of Thud!) it makes more sense.

P.s. for those who are wondering, the cow goes Moo and it's in the fridge.

total disappointment (0/3 people found this helpful)

You would expect the author to be above such gross commercial act, but actually the book consists of a (very) few sentences lifted from the novel "Thud", accompanied by bland illustrations.
This is neither a book for children nor adults. No deeper meaning, here, nothing that justifies the expense.
Avoid it !

A great read for both my son *and* me (13/14 people found this helpful)

Although I think every Pratchett fan should read this book, there isn't much story to it and probably only two groups will find it worth buying - the hard-core fans who have to have *everything* by him, and the parents of small children.

I fall into the second category, and, as such, would heartily recommend it to other Pratchett parents. A children's book that's enjoyable rather than tiresome to adults and that stands up to endless rereads is a treasure that a parent can't afford to miss. This is a superbly funny satire of the normal structure of a children's book, with some of the best illustrations I've ever seen. (I don't know who Melvyn Grant is, but where *was* he when the illustrations were being done for the covers of the other Discworld books? His fantastic blends of realistic-looking characters and fantasy-dreamworld leave Josh Kirby standing. I hope this guy is hired for every new edition in the future.)

Like one of the other reviewers, I would also not have read this book to a child. My husband thought differently, and so, it turned out, did our son. When my husband introduced him to the book at the age of 21 months, he loved it. And, no, he hasn't started saying 'Bugrit' yet.

Who says adults have to grow up...? (7/7 people found this helpful)

This book is BRILLIANT! I got it because I'd read Thud! and obviously it's the spin-off - but it's so good, so funny, and great if (like me) you find yourself too busy to be able to sit down with a good book as much as you'd like... I often pick this up for a quick 5 minutes of reading pleasure (without having to stop at a crucial/inconvenient part of the narrative!)

Of course it's not going to stand up to high literary criticism - it is after all written to be accessible for young children in its writing style. But it is a little bundle of joy all in itself - oh the nostalgia, of the time when two clauses was a LONG sentence...

If you are a Pratchett fan, and read it as an accompaniment to Thud!, you will like this book. I can't speak for anyone else, but would like to think it has a wider audience too.
