it is a mystery to me why this book is not more celebrated and known- particularly in the gay community. the talent displayed in this book is really extraordinary. glave is a master stylist and takes immense risks that pay off. the stories he tells are often from people whose voices are traditionally unheard in our society and he has an uncanny ability to help you hear them in all their complexity. there are also no easy answers in his stories.
he has the ability to make the language he is using jump into new forms to articulate the inner truth of his story. the effect of reading them can leave you physically breathless.
be warned. a lot of the stories deal with very difficult issues and as the book goes on they get more difficult. but if you can stay the course you are in for some of the best and most liberating writing around today.
james baldwin once said that it is the job of the writer to summmon every ounce of courage and stamina to see and tell things as they really are. thomas glave is one of the few writers writing about gay issues who has the right to fully claim that crown.
i also ought to say that in my review i've emphasised the gay dimensions of his writing as this is what resonates with me the most. however this limits the scope of the book. glave visits many different parts of society and brings his truth telling skills to all of them.
