Reader Reviews:Read, learn and love (3/3 people found this helpful)I found this book to be brilliant, well written and relevant to me as a black woman growing up in Britain. Obviously written from and for the American experience it touched on things I have felt and put into words things I wasn't able to express and episodes which had happened in my life. It gave me insight into the lives of Puerto Ricans, American Indians etc as the racial groupings in Britain are slightly different. I think anyone who is interested in different cultures and in their own and who are interested in a just society should read this book. This book really opened my eyes. (1/1 people found this helpful)I am a college student majoring in education. I read this book for a class on racism. This book really opened my eyes to the needs of multi-racial students. I realize that not all students are the same and teaching them the same will not benifit all of my students. A practical guide to the day to day psychology of race. (0/0 people found this helpful)Although Tatum writes from a psychological perspective she does not dwell on theory. She provides practical advice and real world examples, often from her own family's experience, of how the race system works in America, how to teach your kids about race and how deal with racism within yourself. Her explanations and examples of white racism were both varied and accurate. Whites will find this book helpful in understanding their own prejudices and privileges. Blacks will find practical advice on dealing with racial issues and an explanation of white behavior. A very readable and important book on racism. (0/0 people found this helpful)A topic so much a part of our American experience, it's so seldom that it can be handled with grace, fairness, understanding and clarity, but this book is successful on all counts. As a high school librarian, I will use this with both students and with faculty members who want to better understand the "whys" of our kids' social behavior. Describes the day-to-day impact of racism (0/0 people found this helpful)I highly recommend this book to everyone, particularly white people who think the issues of race relations are straightforward. The book is quite up-to-date and taught me a lot even though I've worked on issues of racism and diversity for years. The best part for me was the description of what it's like to grow up as a racial minority; how a member of those communities is affected and reacts to the many messages that become increasingly obvious but of which the majority population is pretty much ignorant. I don't put as much faith as Tatum seems to in the ability of talking and educating to change society, but she really understands the problems of everyday racism.
