Reader Reviews:fascinating insight (6/6 people found this helpful)This is a fascinating insight into a working life with Mr Churchill. Elizabeth Nel records the daily minutiae of her secretarial endeavour whilst at the same time providing quite a detailed picture of the Prime Minister in his relations with the allies during the wartime years. What particularly come across are not only her loyalty and commitment but also her strong sense of responsibility. The Master was clearly difficult to work for, and at times his demands were great, but his secretary found he could be amusing as well as inspirational, and she evidently found great joy in her professional association with him. The book can be usefully read alongside "From Churchill's War Rooms: Letters of a Secretary, 1943-45" and "The Inner Circle: A View of War at the Top", to achieve a more thorough portrait of these responsible civilian women who, being friends and colleagues, acted together as efficient senior officers and secretaries throughout this turbulent period.
