A pretty good introduction to basic web-page creation (5/5 people found this helpful)

I bought this book because I was interested in XML, but wanted something quite concrete to begin with. This book doesn't, as I'd hoped, cover the extensibility of XML, but is a good introduction to the basic elements of XHTML.

Before coming to this book, I'd learnt some HTML but I'd found aspects of it confusing - stylesheets, for example. I now feel I have a good grasp of these aspects, and a basis for going further. As already mentioned, McGrath covers how the pages will display on mobile devices. He also covers other accessibility issues such as the use of the axis-attribute to categorize table data, making it more usable with speaking browsers.

The book has a few flaws, such as not always indicating what is essential for valid XHTML (leaving you to find out some of it when you validate your document). These are minor quibbles, however, as the web-page will still work perfectly well. The book is clear and well-structured, with plenty of references to useful material on the internet, and is a good starting point.

A Simple Way to Learn the Latest Web Page Coding (3/4 people found this helpful)

The powers-that-be on the World Wide Web have decreed we should all start to use XHTML tags for our web pages - and this book shows you how, and why, using simple examples. Mostly the move from HTML to XHTML is to accomodate mobile browsers so the book's screenshots illustrate how the examples appear in both a traditional desktop browser and on a mobile phone browser. The review of this book that says XHTML Basic is only for WAP and PDA is incorrect - that standard includes nearly all the XHTML tags but omits those few tags that are irrelavant for mobile browsers. This means that web pages coded using the examples in this book can be viewed both on desktop browsers and mobile browsers. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to start coding their web pages to the latest specs so they can be viewed on both desktop and mobile browsers.

New to XHTML then try this book... (3/4 people found this helpful)

This book is full of informative text along with screen grabs to help explain fuly what a certain coding will look like. The book covers everything from the very basics, such as setting up a page, to more advanced things such as forms and frames. Everything is explained clearly, and is easy to understand. There is not to much text so it doesn't take that long to read. The three screen grabs it uses show
a)the code used
b)what the page looks like in a normal browser (InternetExplorer)
c)what the page would look like in a mobile phone browser.
This is useful if you want to make your site available to Mobile Phone users.

Another thing which this book has is links to downloadable code to prevent the need for you to type it all out. Also printable reference guides from its webste.

Overall a very useful book which if you are a beginner is brilliant and if you already know a bit about html is a useful reference guide.

Wrong title - XHTML BASIC - WAP and PDA only (7/11 people found this helpful)

XHTML is the 'bridge' for the movement of the web into the future. Whether learning it as a newcomer to web design or for upgrading old skills it is, along with accessibility, what we all should be learning.
Books in the 'easy steps' line are usually very good and cheap and there have been a number of HTML versions by different authors.
This book could have been much more useful if it covered standard web page design rather than limiting itself to 'XHTML Basic' which is for WAP and PDA
