Despite its modern features, the castle built around 1300
conformed to a type common in the West of Scotland known as a "castle
of enceinte" in which the main defence relied on a single massive enclosing
wall, in this case with projecting towers...
... The importance of Skipness may have been partially eclipsed by the construction
of the castle of Tarbert, which King Robert the Bruce placed in the hands of
the MacDonalds in 1324. |
