Skipness Castle, c.1300

Despite its modern features, the castle built around 1300 conformed to a type common in the West of Scotland known as a "castle of enceinte" in which the main defence relied on a single massive enclosing wall, in this case with projecting towers...
... The importance of Skipness may have been partially eclipsed by the construction of the castle of Tarbert, which King Robert the Bruce placed in the hands of the MacDonalds in 1324.
