Brilliant......and imperfect (0/0 people found this helpful)

Wilson continues to impress me. This is once again a great novel - exceptionally well-written and with a sound plot involving terrorism. I love the colour Wilson is able to inject into his writing.

That said, parts of the book are long-winded, there is a challenging number of characters and I felt there was an irrelevant thread or two.

Overall, however, this was a very good read with minor annoyances here and there.

A little too much going on (0/0 people found this helpful)

In this book, Javier Falcon, a senior investigator in a Spanish provincial town (Seville) has to investigate an explosion that demolished a block of flats in an area of the city that has racial tensions. The investigation is challeneged from the start because there's a Mosque at the bottom of the block. Consequently, the investigation immediately focuses on the Muslims who worship there. Were they constructing the bomb? Were they set up to look like they were up to something? Were they the target? Were they part of a bigger conspiracy? If so, with whom? All of these questions are answered by the end of the book.

As you can tell from my introduction, the investigation leads Falcon in a number of different directions. It involves the American and Spanish secret services, and Falcon's Muslim and Arabic friends. It also see Falcon develop a love interest, and a married couple have a rather sordid set of goings on (for no apparent reason that really advanced the story, so far as I could tell).

The different strands are all woven together rather neatly by the end. The problem is it took a while to get there. Don't get me wrong, I mostly liked the journey, but did we really need the love interest? Probably not. Did we need the married couple's sordid goings on? Not really, and I rather suspect that the book would have been tighter for them not being there.

A great Javier Falcon fan (1/1 people found this helpful)

I personally think this book is the best todate - An excellent storyline and credible reading - but Falcon is definitely for readers who enjoy detail - one of the few authors who can write a book that I can't read in a day.

Absorbing thriller (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is the first novel by Robert Wilson that I've read, but it certainly won't be the last. His writing is gripping, easy to read, and he tells a good, multi-layered story. This one involves an apparent terrorist attack on a mosque in Seville, that spirals into a darker and more dangerous conspiracy.
My only complaint - and it's not too significant - is that I think he had too many characters, too many of whom had similar names, and I frequently found myself stopping while I was reading to go back to earlier sections so that I could work out exactly who he was talking about.
But overall, an absorbing read.

a great read (0/0 people found this helpful)

this is the second of robert wilsons books that I have read. I did feel afterwards that I should have re-read "the blind man" before attempting this just to get some better perspective on Javier Falcon. The story is strong and stands alone however there are parts where there is some waffle that could have been eliminated. definitely a keeper............
